The advices by the Ministry of Health to face low temperatures with your children.

During winter, when it’s really cold, children are particularly vulnerable to freeze effects. Why? In the first few months old of life, the body’s thermostat is less effective: a newborn is really vulnerable to low temperatures and can easily face hypothermia condition. Moreover, a child seems to feel the freezing sensation much less when compared to a teenager or an adult. What can we do?

  • Parents must pay attention and check every part of the child’s body: if they’re cold and numb (especially hands, face and feet), they have to be heated immediately to prevent injury, chilblains, freezing (most often the feet) or hypothermia, in severe cases.
  • In the event of weather alert, you should not leave the house with babies that are less than three months old.
  • It is essential to hydrate the baby regularly.
  • If you have to go outside you have to adequately dress the baby. It is a must to protect the baby’s body with several layers of warm and dry clothes, away from moisture, even under ambient conditions that do not seem particularly severe. The head must always be protected with a hat, because 30% of the heat loss takes place through the head.
  • Avoid using baby carrier for the transportation of neonates: the circulation in the legs is slowed because the harness that compresses the legs and thus the body temperature can be reduced by encouraging the appearance of chilblains. It is better to transport the baby by using the pram or stroller.
  • If you have a driving tips for long car journeys, always carry on board spare clothes, blankets, warm drinks (bottles in isothermal bag) and at least one meal if the child has been weaned.
